When you get your teeth, they’re surrounded by a hard, white layer of what’s known as “enamel”. This enamel is composed of densely packed mineral crystals. These are made from nutrients like calcium and fluoride, and in their natural form, they’re white; durable; beautiful.

Unfortunately, enamel tends to wear out and yellow with time – and unlike the rest of your body, it doesn’t grow back when lost. This means that teeth can become discolored, grey, yellow, chipped and damaged over time. If you’d like to reverse all these problems, and prevent them from ever happening to you again in the future – as well as give your teeth the color and shape you want – there’s a solution.

What Veneers Can Do

Veneers are basically “replacement enamel”. They are extremely thin, and they’re attached to the top layer of your teeth in a way that makes them indistinguishable from your organic tooth matter. This means that they can be used to change the color of your teeth. It doesn’t matter if the natural enamel lost its color due to age, bad habits, medication or something else – a veneer can completely replicate its original color.

Veneers can also alter the shape of your teeth. Let’s say you have several that are undersized. With the help of a veneer, you get an extra layer of “artificial enamel” that matches those smaller teeth to the rest of your smile.

The cool thing is that veneers are permanent. In extremely rare cases, they can break and chip – just like natural teeth – but generally speaking, they’re with you for life. The only reason you may want to change them is to change their color, change their shape or get veneers made from a different (and newer) material – which is rare.

How Getting Veneers Works

Veneers go on top of your enamel – but because your natural teeth are usually closely spaced together, there’s no room for veneers. That room needs to be created by removing a microlayer of enamel with fine dental tools. This may sound dangerous – but the absolute worst case scenario is that you’ll feel sensitive to hot and cold temperatures for a little while. The layer removed will be so thin that it’ll never affect your dental health in any real way.

Once that’s done, the veneers are attached to your tooth starting at the gum. Once your tooth is completely enveloped, and the material has been firmly attached, you’re done. You now have high-tech, better-than-natural enamel instead of what you used to have. This enamel can be shaped, colored and presented in any way you like, giving you full control over how your smile looks, feels and performs.
